New record June temperature in Spain and Portugal

The heat wave engulfing the Iberian peninsula and France produced two record June temperatures as the month came to a close in Spain and Portugal.

A temperature of 46°C in El Granado, in the province of Huelva south west Spain and close to the border with Portugal was recorded on 28 June. This temperature is yet to be officially ratified although reported by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

Aemet have reported that June with an average temperature of 23.6°C is the warmest on record in Spain and 0.8°C above the previous record experienced in June 2017. The average temperature exceeds the average of the period 1991-2020 by no less than 3.5 °C.

One day later, Mora, a town in the Évora district of Portugal 100 kilometres east of the capital, Lisbon, recorded a temperature of 46.6°C. This was confirmed by the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) as the highest daily June temperature surpassing the previous June high of 44.9°C  recorded in Alcácer do Sal, Setúbal, on 17 June 2017. It was reported that 37 percent of IPMA monitoring stations recorded temperatures higher than 40°C on the 29 June.

To provide further context to the record temperature, the temperature of 46.6°C was only 0.7°C below Portugal’s all-time highest temperature of 47.3°C, recorded in Amareleja, Beja district, on 1 August 2003
