Extreme heat and a new wave of flooding hits China

The summer of extreme weather continues in China with new regions affected

This week, China has been grappling with severe weather challenges, including extreme heat and further widespread flooding.

The outer reaches of Typhoon Wipha has brought torrential rains to southern China, particularly affecting coastal provinces like Zhejiang and Fujian. On 21 July, A total of 296 mm of rain fell over a 12 hour period triggering widespread flooding.

On 20 July, the Dongkan National Meteorological Station in Xinjiang’s Turpan Basin located in north west China recorded an air temperature of 48.7°C, establishing a new all-time high for the station and ranking as the third-highest temperature ever officially recorded at a national-level weather station in China. As can be seen from the post below two automatic weather stations in the same region recorded temperatures above 50°C. The highest ever recorded temperature in China was at Sanbao Township also in the Turpan Basin at 52.2°C 16 July 2023.
