A significant temperature drop has brought an abrupt end to summer temperatures in the eastern United States with records for lowest August temperatures tumbling.
The lower temperatures are a result of a large upper-level cold wave originating from Canada, flowing in to the eastern United States with the potential for the anomalous cold temperatures extending into the final days of August. Temperatures have been experienced 15 to 25°F below normal.

A number of longstanding records were reported as broken on Wednesday 27 August including Boston, Massachusetts recorded a low of 50°F (10°C), which was cooler than the previous record of 52°F (11.1°C) set in 1950. While Pittsburgh experienced a low of 48°F (8.9°C), breaking the previous record of 50°F (10°C) set in 1964.
